Former Mbizana Local Municipality undergoes name change

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality

The former Mbizana Local Municipality underwent a name change from the former to the now known as the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality. The Local Municipality has been named after the struggle icon and local heroine from Mbongweni Village.

The ceremony for the official unveiling was held today in the presence of Minister Nkosazana-Dlamini Zuma who leads the national Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA). Other notable dignitaries present were Mr Xolile Nqatha who is the MEC of COGTA in the Eastern Cape and the Mayor of the Local Municipality Daniswa Mafumbatha.

“Winnie Madikizela-Mandela born on 26 September 1936 in Bizana, Mbhongweni Village KwaNgutyana. Winnie Madikizela Mandela cut her teeth in the fight against the apartheid rule. Her role as a political activist defied odds and becone a symbol of strength to women of all nations,” a statement from the municipality.
